Firspring Capital, a small-business funding broker in Sioux City, Iowa, arranges inventory financing through lending partners. It funds stock bought ahead of sale, is usually secured by that stock through a UCC filing, and is paid down as goods sell. Partners review sales history and inventory records and set every rate and term.

How inventory financing works
A partner advances money against inventory you are buying or already hold. Some structures are a loan with a set term; others are a line that rises and falls with stock levels. In both, the goods are the main collateral. The partner advances only part of the inventory's value, because stock loses value if it has to be sold quickly, and some goods hold value far better than others.
Repayment follows sell-through. As goods sell, the proceeds pay the balance down, and new purchases may be funded again under a revolving structure.
Collateral and the UCC filing
To secure the stock, the partner files a UCC-1 financing statement, a public notice that it has a claim on the inventory. In Iowa these filings are searchable, and owners often run an Iowa UCC search on their own business before applying to see what liens are already recorded. An old lien from a paid-off loan can slow a new request until it is released.
The partner may also ask for regular inventory reports or check stock in person, so a clean, current count matters.
Floor plan financing, factoring and other neighbors
Floor plan financing
Floor plan financing is inventory financing for high-value items sold one at a time, where each unit is financed individually and paid off when it sells. It is common in businesses that sell vehicles, boats or large appliances.
Inventory financing vs factoring
Factoring is different: a business sells its unpaid invoices to a factor for cash now. Inventory financing borrows against goods not yet sold; factoring sells money customers already owe. A Siouxland distributor could lean on one for its warehouse stock and the other for invoices to stores.
Inventory financing vs a line of credit
A general business line of credit can also buy stock, but it is not tied to the goods. Inventory financing is often easier to obtain for a stock-heavy business because the collateral is clear.
Retail and wholesale in Woodbury County, IA
Retail trade had more employer establishments than any other sector in Woodbury County in 2023: 388, with 7,138 paid employees and about $217.8 million in annual payroll (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). The county also had 163 wholesale trade employer establishments. Separately, 523 retail businesses in the county reported no paid employees in 2024 (Nonemployer Statistics 2024), a different survey and year that should not be added to the employer count.
Our post on how Sioux City retailers use inventory loans works through a restock decision, and Census counts for Woodbury County gives the wider business mix. Retailers getting ready to apply should also read the Iowa sales tax permit guide, since partners often check that a store's records line up.
What partners review
- Sales history, ideally by product line or category.
- A current inventory list with cost and age.
- Supplier invoices or purchase orders for the stock being financed.
- Business bank statements.
- Existing liens found in a UCC search.
Shop fixtures and POS systems are equipment rather than inventory; the POS and store equipment payment calculator estimates that side. Other sectors are on the sectors overview, and the sequence of steps is on how a request works.
